COVID Update
We continue to hold a significant number of Lateral Flow testing kits within the school. Please can you encourage your youngster to collect enough testing kits to allow twice a week testing to continue over the festive period. We are also encouraging all staff and young people to test on Sunday 9th January prior to the start of the new term on Monday 10th January.

Contingency Plans regarding SQA Exams 2022
Following the emergence of the Omicron variant, SQA has received questions from centres, parents and learners about its plans for exams in 2022. This follows the statement given by the First Minister last week.
We want to reassure you that SQA has robust contingency plans in place that support learners, parents, carers, teachers and lecturers over the coming months, and that we are continuing to work closely with the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 Education Recovery Group, and the National Qualifications 2022 (NQ22) Group, which includes learner, parent and carer representatives, professional associations and education leaders.
KHS DUX 2021
Our very heartiest congratulations to Alex Bisset – last year’s S6- who as Dux of KHS for 2021, was awarded the Bowmont Medal donated by His Grace, the Duke of Roxburghe. Unfortunately due to his university commitments, Alex was unable to attend in person to collect his award, but we thought we would take this opportunity to congratulate Alex in his magnificent achievement and share this photo of his name – the latest addition to our Dux Board.
Senior Assessments
Our last senior assessment for this term on Tuesday 21st December and would like to take this opportunity to commend all our young people. Feedback for our invigilation team and staff has been extremely positive, stating that our young people have been respectful and conscientious at all times.

Our fantastic Head Team along with Mrs Ramsay have made a real effort to ensure we bring a little Christmas cheer into KHS. Who would have thought that our staff would become so competitive over who has the best decorated and/or window. Keep an eye out on KHS Social Media for photos.

Christmas Jumper/Accessory day
Pupils can dress festively in their Jumper or accessories. Please do your bit for the environment by using what you already have, instead of buying new! Donations to Borders Children’s Charity, please only give what you can!

Foodbank Donations
We are collecting donations for Kelso Food Bank this Christmas. If you have anything (non-perishable) you would like to donate please bring to school and place it under the Christmas tree.
In particular they are looking for donations of the following:
Tinned goods: potatoes, fruit/veg, spaghetti & Jars of pasta sauce.
Festive Door
Christmas door judging will take place in the morning (by Head Team) and prizes delivered!
Quiz/Challenge
During P6&7 Head Team will host a Christmas quiz/challenge.
Active Schools
#ThanksToSport is a very fitting theme for our final Active Schools newsletter of the year. Sport and physical activity has played an even more important role than normal in everyone’s lives over the last 20 or so months. Our December newsletter gives us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon the team getting back to what we do best and to highlight the fantastic work that has been going on in our schools and communities since we returned in August.
Scottish Government Free Bus Travel for Under 22s – Survey
Do you have a child aged 5-16, or are you a young person aged 12-21? If so, please complete the short travel survey for a chance to win up to £250 in Love2Shop vouchers.
The Scottish Government will soon be launching the Free Bus Travel Scheme for young people between the ages of 5 and 21. This aims to encourage greener travel patterns, and increase opportunities for young people to engage in employment, education and social activities and not be excluded due to travel costs. Transport Scotland will monitor the scheme as it progresses to check on use and impact. The first step is to try and understand current travel patterns so that any changes after the scheme is introduced can be identified.
We would be grateful if parents/carers of younger children (i.e. those aged 5-16), or young people aged 12-21 themselves, could complete this short travel survey. The questionnaire asks about current travel behaviour, and your thoughts about bus travel generally and the free bus travel. This should take no more than 10 minutes to do.
