Wishing you a lovely Christmas holiday

As we approach the end of term, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support throughout the year.

We wish you and your families a joyful and restful Christmas holiday filled with happiness and special moments.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the New Year, Monday 6th January 2025, refreshed and ready for the term ahead.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Wear Something Christmassy

On Wednesday 18th December, our Charity Committee invites the school community to join in the festive spirit by wearing something Christmassy! This could be a Christmas-themed jumper, hat, badge, or even just some tinsel.

The Charity Committee will visit register classes to collect any donations, which will go towards supporting their chosen cause.  We’ve chosen this date to coincide with our school canteen’s annual Christmas Dinner menu, making it a truly festive day for all!

Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing everyone’s festive flair!

S1/S6 Buddy Cinema Trip

We are looking forward to our S1/S6 Buddy Cinema Trip which takes place on Monday 16th December 2024. This trip is an opportunity for our S1 and S6 students to enjoy time together as they head to The Pavilion Cinema in Galashiels to watch the movie Moana 2.

Trip Details:

  • All S1 and S6 pupils will register as normal then make their way to the canteen for extended Buddy time and organisation into bus groups.  The buses will depart from the front of the school at 9.30 am and return by approx. 1pm. Students will wait in the canteen until the lunch bell rings.
  • Cost: £12 per person (payable via ParentPay). If financial support is required, please don’t hesitate to contact our school office confidentially for assistance.
  • A completed medical permission form must be completed and handed into the School Office to enable your young person to attend this trip.

Important Information:

  • All young people will be asked to leave their mobile phones in a secure box at school before departing. Phones will be safely returned upon their arrival back at school.
  • The Pavilion Cinema has requested that only food purchased on-site can be consumed. If students wish to buy snacks or drinks, they should bring additional money.

We are looking forward to this trip and are confident it will be a fantastic experience for our students. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Christmas Socials

We are excited to welcome our Juniors and Seniors to their respective Christmas Dances next week! This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to come together, showcase their ceilidh dancing skills, and enjoy socialising with their friends in a festive atmosphere.

Our Junior Social is on Monday 16th December from 6.00pm – 9.00pm and our Senior Social is on Thursday 19th from 7.00pm – 10.30pm.  Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased via ParentPay.

We look forward to celebrating this special time of year with our students and creating lasting memories.

Responsible Parking Around Kelso High School

We have received concerns from local residents regarding parking in the housing development near Kelso High School, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.

Issues include cars blocking access to residential areas and parking on public footpaths, which creates safety risks for pedestrians, including those with prams.

We kindly ask all parents and carers to park responsibly, ensuring access is not blocked for residents and that footpaths are kept clear.

Let’s work together to maintain a safe and considerate environment for everyone in our community.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Kelso Food Bank Donation

Our S6 Charity Committee is proudly supporting Kelso Food Bank this festive season. We kindly ask our school community to contribute by donating tinned or dry food items such as pasta, beans, soup, or canned fruit.

Donations can be brought into school and placed under the Christmas Tree in the front foyer any morning until Thursday 19th December.

Thank you for your generosity in helping us make a positive difference in our community.

Clock Off! It’s a Wrap

We’ve officially Clocked Off! We’ve now successfully completed our first Health & Wellbeing program.

Our S1 peer mentors completed a series of training sessions with the charity Sleep Action. They learned about the importance of sleep, how to improve sleep patterns and were encouraged to positively influence the habits of others to improve wellness amongst their peers and in the community.

In August, six members of our staff also received training so that they could deliver three related lessons which were embedded in the literacy course. Plans are also underway to reinforce the importance of sleep hygiene via the PSE program at KHS.

Our partners at Glasgow University, who ran the study, conducted follow up sessions to gauge the success of peer mentorship in our S1 and it was great to see several of our S1 confidently contributing by providing feedback during the survey process.

In the run up to exams let’s continue to impress upon our young people the importance of good habits, routine, and self-care.

Effective Skills

Every Thursday, Effective Now LTD have been working with a selected group of senior students from Kelso on a Meta Skills programme to develop their CONFIDENCE, RESILIENCE and COMMUNICATION. This programme focuses on different Meta Skill modules each week.

The activities are based on problem solving tasks that require different skills to be used to be successful.

So far, the group have worked on –

  • Communication
  • Collaboration & Teamwork
  • Innovation & Creativity
  • Strategic Thinking & Problem Solving
  • Negotiation & Conflict Resolution

The group are using skills the businesses we work with value and want to see in their staff. These Meta Skills allow young people to learn industry specific knowledge more quickly and have the confidence to adapt to the demands of the role in their job.

They look forward to developing the programme further and strengthening the partnership with Kelso High School and the local community.

Update from the Head Team

It’s been another busy week! Prelim prep and end of year specials. Last night we had our Christmas concert and market with a fabulous turn out from local stalls and students! The concert was also just as spectacular, well done to all students and teachers who participated! Christmas doors are getting ready and decorated with the judging happening next week! Speaking of next week, we have a socials taking place (juniors on Monday and seniors on Thursday), the S1 and S6 cinema trip is also taking place on Monday, our Christmas can day (we would like to encourage all if possible to bring in canned and long life food that can be donated to the local food bank), and our Christmas lunch on the 18th!

Thank you for reading and have a lovely weekend!

Grace

Thank you!

As a school we are always genuinely humbled and truly grateful for the support shown to us by friends of KHS and members of the wider KHS community. We would like to thank The McFadyen family for donating this most beautiful Christmas tree – your kindness and generosity are very much appreciated. Thank you! #pridekhs

We Are A Very Proud School

We are a very proud school! Congratulations to Jack Utterson in S6 on his selection for the Scotland U20s squad to play Wales U20s on Friday afternoon. This is a great achievement for Jack and we wish him all the best! Go well, Jack!

Well done, Lucy!

In hugely exciting news, Lucy Campbell in S6 is representing Scotland at the International Meeting of Young Beekeepers (IMYB) – the biggest international meeting of young beekeepers in the world to be held in Dubai later this month.

Lucy flies out to Dubai next week to compete against young beekeepers from over twenty countries. We wish Lucy and the rest of Team Scotland all the very best of luck and can’t wait to hear how they get on. Lucy started her beekeeping journey here at KHS as a founding member of our Bee Club and was part of our Beekeeping Trip to London in 2022
