Update from the Head Team

This week, we’ve had lots of learning opportunities as dyslexia hubs have been running throughout. Looking ahead, don’t forget about our upcoming Quiz Night on 13th November—it’s just £3 per entry, and there’ll be prizes and a raffle! It’s the perfect chance to team up, test your knowledge, and have some fun, so come along!

Meanwhile, LEAPS interviews have been taking place for pupils aiming for university, and I’m happy to say they’ve all gone really well. With prelims just around the corner, we’re staying focused and working hard in our courses.

Thanks for reading, and have a fantastic weekend! Jenna

Celebration Event of Young People’s Achievements

When: Thursday, 14th November, 6:00 – 7:30 PM
Where: Tait Hall, Kelso

Our plans are going well to celebrate the incredible achievements of our young people, who have dedicated over 1,000 hours of volunteering across various impactful projects! Around 140 attendees are expected to honour approximately 50 young people involved in programs such as Inspiring Young Minds, Youth Work Learning, and the Kelso Skatepark Lights Project—all delivered with the support of our partners at KHS.

A big thank you to the organizers, Louise Rawlins (CLDS), Julie Pollock (SDS), Stacey Ballantyne (DYW), John MacLeod (Youth Worker), and Ali Wilson (DHT), for making this event possible.

Let’s come together to applaud the hard work and dedication of these inspiring young volunteers!

Skatepark Meeting with the Provost and Councillors at KHS

Louise Rawlins, our CLD worker for Youth Learning, supported our young people to lead a meeting with the Provost, Councillors and Cheviot Youth to discuss issues at our local skatepark.  The meeting was ably chaired by Lucca who led the agenda with inputs from all the young people.  The team left with actions and plans to take forward a campaign to address litter in Kelso. This work will contribute to their Youth Achievement Award programme.

Royal Navy Team Building and Challenge Workshops

On Tuesday, all our S1 learners took part in an exciting series of workshops led by the Royal Navy! They tackled a variety of challenging tasks, putting their teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills to the test.

The Royal Navy provided fantastic feedback, commending the enthusiasm and effort shown by our S1 students. A huge well done to everyone involved—what an amazing example of #PRIDE in action!

Arkwright Engineering Scholarship

Good luck to Sam Nowakowski and Isaac Lewis who are currently hard at work finalising their applications for the above Scholarship and preparing for their aptitude tests later this month.  This is a prestigious scholarship, and we wish them all the very best.

Funding Available – Thomas Maconochie Trust

Bids are invited from the above Trust for the meeting which will take place on Thursday 5th December 2024. Application forms can be collected from the School Office or, alternatively, you can complete the electronic copy below.

Information about the Trust and the purpose of it is detailed below:-

The Thomas Maconochie KHS Trust was established in 2003 by Mr Thomas Maconochie, a former pupil of the school.  The trust is a recognised Charity, Scottish Charity No: SCO34775.
The purposes of the Trust are “to advance the education of children at school in Kelso and its environment in such a way as are over and above the statutory requirement of the relevant Education Authority.”
In practice, this means that this Fund may choose to support educational activities carried out by Kelso High School pupils which are not directly funded by legal requirement by the Education Authority, namely Scottish Borders Council.  This may include grants to support:-

  • pupil participation in business and enterprise related activities
  • pupils taking part in school activities and excursions where, for any reason, lack of finance is a barrier to participation
  • the start up of new extra-curricular activities, e.g. school shows, drama, etc.
  • ongoing running costs for extra-curricular activities, e.g. sport, music and drama
  • extra activities offered in school for classes, groups or year groups, e.g. conferences, education for work initiatives, visits
  • individual pupil participation in courses and activities, e.g. Gap Year

All groups / individuals who have received funding at a previous meeting should submit a report (with photographs if possible) indicating how the money was spent and the experience gained from taking part in the activity.

Deadline for Bids and Feedback Reports is Friday 22nd November 2024. Completed Application Forms should be returned to the School Office or alternatively, they can be e-mailed to KelsoHS@scotborders.gov.uk by the same date.
