Update from the Head Team

This Week at School there have been a number of opportunities for all:

  • Prelim Support: Lunchtime help sessions in Maths and Chemistry have been offered this week to support us preparing for their prelims.
  • S1 Opportunity: S1s have been invited to join the Digital Avengers team, with two or more spaces available. This is a great chance for S1s to develop their digital skills and contribute to our school community!
  • S4-S6 Opportunity: As Seniors, we have the chance to become a Mental Health Ambassador, taking on an important role in promoting well-being within the school.

We’re proud to offer these opportunities and support, please encourage your youngster to get involved!

S5/6 Parents’ Evening – Thursday 28th November 2024

Our S5/6 Parents’ Evening will be held on Thursday 28th November 2024 from 5.00pm until 7.30pm in school.

The online booking system for appointments was opened on Wednesday and will remain open to take your bookings until 6.00pm on Wednesday 27th November. Please note spaces are limited.

More information was sent by Groupcall earlier this week on how to book appointments.

KHS Remembers

Last Monday, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, our learners, staff and honoured guests came together in a solemn silence to honour those who have served and given their lives for our country. Our grateful thanks to: Mrs Lothian and our Head Team for organising and leading this respectful tribute; Aurora Campbell for her moving rendition of ‘The Last Post’; Lucy Campbell for her heartfelt readings; Susannah Ayling and Lucca Starkey for laying a wreath; James Aitchison for his poignant bagpipe lament; and our S6 students for reading out the names of all KHS staff and past pupils who have lost their lives in the service of our country. Special thanks to Mr Robertson, Mr Watmore, Miss Riley and Mr Borthwick for organising the sound systems and the flagpole. Thank you too to all staff and learners for joining us in this moving act of remembrance, where our KHS community came together to demonstrate our school values of participation, respect, included, determination and excellence. This moving ceremony truly highlighted our school values and fittingly honoured those who have served and given their lives for our country. More photos of the event can be found on our KHS Facebook page. #pridekhs

Well Done to our Junior Rangers

Well done to our KHS Junior Rangers! Congratulations to Dean Rutherford, Freddie Douglas, Zac Swinton, Max Cook and Callum Fuller-Shapcott who have completed their Junior Ranger Award programme. Huge thanks to both Lisa and Cody from Go Wild Scotland and to our very own youth worker John McLeod for supporting this group on their journey. Our grateful thanks as always to Roxburghe Estates for their on-going support of KHS and for allowing the group access to Roxburghe Estate land to develop their knowledge of the countryside and their interest in sustaining their local environment. #pridekhs

We Are The Champions!

We are the Champions!! Congratulations to Kyle Agnew, Arsen Mkrtchian and Kane Wilkie who were awarded the Senior S4 to S6 Trophy and declared overall winners of the Scottish Borders Esports Competition. Thank you to Miss Roden for accompanying and for her support of the team. Well done to all involved! #pridekhs

Congratulations to our S2/S3 Hockey Team

Huge congratulations to our S2/S3 Hockey Team who personified our school values of Participation, Respect, Included, Determination and Excellence in their Scottish Junior Challenge Quarter Final match against Wellington School from Ayr. A magnificent 5-0 win to KHS sees us progress into the Semi-Finals. Well done to all involved! This is an achievement to be proud of! Please enjoy some photos from yesterday’s game. More photos can be found on our KHS Facebook page.  #pridekhs

Even More Hockey Success

Huge congratulations to our S1/S2 Boys’ Hockey Team who won the Scottish Junior Aspire (South) Tournament with a 2-1 win over Linlithgow and Firrhill Schools, a 5-0 defeat of Boroughmuir High School and a 5-1 victory against hosts Lasswade High School. Thank you to our Director of Hockey David Ferguson and all parents who helped ensure our players were able to attend the event. Our KHS team will now go forward to a Scottish Finals event in May 2025 – date to be confirmed. Well done to all involved. We are a very proud school! #pridekhks

Disability Inclusion Workshop

Last week our Senior Sports Leaders were taken through a Disability Inclusion workshop by Disability Sports Development Officer, Greig Shortreed. Students worked on various aspects of inclusion, including how to communicate effectively, influencing and delivering good practise and focussing on ability rather than disability.

This was a hugely valuable experience for our Senior Sports leaders! Our grateful thanks to Greig for delivering this fantastic opportunity and to Miss Rout and Chris Fraser of Live Borders for organising. We now look forward to our Sports Leaders putting their new skills into practise! Well done to all involved! #pridekhs

Well Done Riley!

We are always delighted to hear about and share the amazing wider achievements of our learners outwith KHS. Huge congratulations to Riley Morton in S2 who recently represented Scotland in the Under 15 B Team in the 2024 Festival of Black Ball Pool held in Coleraine, Northern Ireland in October. Riley and his three team mates beat Wales 8-6 in the Quarter Finals, but then lost to a very strong England Team. This was Riley’s first time representing Scotland and we look forward to hearing more about Riley’s future successes. Good luck Riley for the new Pool season starting in January! We are a very proud school. #pridekhs

Congratulations Mr Brown!

We are a very proud school.  Congratulations to our Principal Teacher of PE and HE, Mr Kevin Brown, who has been awarded the Eric Liddell Foundation Award for the East Region for his dedication to rugby development.

Languages Celebration Week Monday 25th November – Friday 29th November

During assemblies, Mrs Scott-Larsen and Miss Boufi will be running a “Guess the Continental Food” house competition. This will involve blindfolding a volunteer from each house and having them guess items like croissants and jalapeños. Don’t worry, we will ensure any allergies are checked beforehand!

S1-2 Competition:  As in previous years, we’ll hold a competition with the top prize being the giant teddy bear.

S3-6 Competition:  This year we will be introducing a new “Design a T-Shirt” competition. The winning design will be printed onto a t-shirt—a great incentive for creativity!

BGE French/German Bistros:  These will take place on Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes, with help from senior students.

In-Class Activities: Throughout the week there will be a range of activities.

Looking forward to another exciting celebration!

GingrTech Business Simulation Competition

A team of 5 senior pupils will represent Kelso High School and take part in the GingrTech Business Simulation Competition.  The competition takes place Friday 29th November (morning) in school, and they compete in a real time virtual business challenge against other high schools in the Borders.

After the success of our last competition (the competition and overall winning school were mentioned in Scottish Parliament), we hope that the winning Borders school will be able to compete in a Final against the winning Dumfries and Galloway school. This could be KHS!
