Battlefields Trip 2017
The fifth payment for the above trip is now overdue, please arrange to pay via ParentPay or send payment to the School Office. Cheques should be made payable to Kelso High School.
Please arrange to hand in your youngster’s passport and EHIC card to the School Office as soon as possible.
KHS Finance Committee
KHS have a school fund to which pupils, staff and parents are able to submit bids for match funding towards extra curricular activities, clubs, projects etc. that benefit KHS pupils.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 24th April and any bids for funding are to be emailed to the school (email@example.com) by Wednesday 19th April.
The bid should include the following information:
* Full details of what the money will be used for
* Full breakdown of costings
* Details of the impact the bid would have on our youngsters
Local Police Scotland representatives have made us aware of their ongoing concerns over young people climbing on roofs and scaffolding in the Jedburgh and Kelso areas. The first and foremost concern is for the safety of our young folk, but there are also monetary implications of damage caused.
Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers
KHS are collecting Active Kids vouchers again this year, with the intention to use these for both cooking and sports equipment. If you would like to donate any vouchers, please hand them in to either the HE or PE staff bases or the main Office. Thank you for your support.
Well done to Duncan McFadyen who passed his UKCC level 1 in Edinburgh on Friday. Duncan received very good feedback including “well up to required standard” and his assessor said “most competent 16 year old she’d ever seen”. Congratulations Duncan.
Three KHS pupils have qualified for the Scottish National Age Group Swimming Championships 2017: Cameron Thompson S2, Erika Coupek S3 and Amy Richardson S4.
The competition is held in Aberdeen at the Aberdeen Sports Village until Sunday.
They will compete in various individual and relay events as part of the 16 strong Borders Squad, Borders Elite Swim Team (BEST). We wish them all the very best of luck.
Hockey Stars Flying High
Scotland U18 Squad - Congratulations to Izzy Kyle and Tara Aitchison who have both been selected for the Scottish U18 squad to play against Wales and Switzerland during the Easter holidays, maintaining a great tradition of international representation at Kelso High. This honour is thoroughly deserved following hard work during training and matches and we wish you and the Scottish squad the best of luck.
South U14 Hockey Squad - Congratulations are also due to Emma Freeland Cook, Molly Howlett, Erin Lawrence, Hannah Patterson, Amy Ralston, Susie Robson and Sophie Younger who have been selected for the South U14 Inter District Squad of 25 players. The final squad of 18 players will be selected after a training game on Sunday 30th April.
Kelso's Magnificent Sevens - KHS's hockey programme is one renowned far and wide and the latest indication of that came with an invitation to take part in a Senior 7s tournament at George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. In a very competitive competition with some of the best schools in Scotland, Kelso won two matches and drew two to finish first in their pool and reach the semi-finals for the first time. They were just pipped for a final spot by Dollar Academy on running penalties after a 2-2 draw. The team did KHS proud with a great performance and tremendous sportsmanship - before heading off to senior ladies matches in the afternoon! Senior 7s squad: Gemma Bootman, Izzy Kyle, Tara Aitchison, Linsey Young, Jessica Howlett, Lara Patterson, Imogen Johnstone-Jones, Aimee Martin, Lucy Murray.
Last weekend we rounded off the final week before the Easter holidays with games in glorious sunny Dunbar. Picture below.
Borders Schools S1 Tournament - In the recent Borders Schools S1 tournament our newest hockey stars also flew the flag high in Hawick with great performances. The A squad, jointly captained by Abby Wood and Roseanna Prentice, won their pool with a draw against Berwickshire High School and wins over Galashiels Academy and Peebles High School, and were just pipped by a goal in the semi-finals by Selkirk HS, who went on to lose out to Peebles in the final. The B squad, jointly captained by Rebecca Middlemiss and Ruth Morgan, did not make it through to the knockout stages but played good hockey and like the As had great fun in their first tournament together, launching their high school hockey careers in fine style.
Kelso Cougars Win U14 East League - KHS also have teams competing on Sunday morning in the Under-14 East league. The squads travelled to Edinburgh last weekend to play the last two fixtures at Meggetland and the Kelso Cougars won 2-0 and 6-1 against Grange and CALA Development respectively to finish top of their group. This is a massive achievement for the team as they really had to up their game to play against some very tough opposition in Group C following their promotion in January, after winning Group E in December. Congratulations to Jessica Davidson, Emma Freeland Cook, Molly Howlett, Erin Lawrence, Hannah Patterson, Amy Ralston, Susie Robson and Sophie Younger, thoroughly deserved league winners after all your hard work each week and some brilliant team hockey during your final two matches.
The Kelso Kiwis, a mix of S1, S2 and S3 players, lost their games 2-0 and 4-1 against strong Watsonians teams on Sunday but they have also worked really hard to develop their skills and game-play over the league's ten weeks and are to be congratulated for their hard work and commitment. All have represented Kelso superbly and become better hockey players as a result of the experience.
We would like to thank all the parents and spectators for your support each week and to all of our bakers as the tray bakes and cakes were amazing! Pictures below.
Borders Sports School - A total of 14 KHS hockey players have also been selected for the 2017 Borders Sports School - to be held on Monday 26th, Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th June. They are: Chloe Aitchison, Ellen Burgher, Lucie Coupek, Emma Freeland-Cook, Sophie Graham, Molly Howlett, Erin Lawrence, Kira McDonnell, Leanne Oliver, Hannah Patterson, Amy Ralston, Susie Robson, Anna Woodcock, Sophie Younger.
Well done to them all and to all those who did not make it through this time around. The coaches have told us the standard was again high in the trials and the decisions very difficult.
Fun and sun in Dunbar - We finished off school matches before the Easter Holidays at a sunny Dunbar at the weekend with the Seniors 2nd XI coming back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2, the S2 Bs claiming a fine 3-2 victory and the mixed S1s team losing out but scoring a fine team goal, finished off by Maisie Zabrocki.
HIT Festival in May - Kelso are entering mixed teams in the Borders HIT Festival at Tweedbank on Friday afternoons throughout May. This is a fun tournament open to boys and girls from S1-S3 - no hockey experience necessary! - and we will run buses so any more boys and girls that wish to play should get in touch with the hockey players or coaches asap.
