Young Folk Musicians

Five S1 and S2 girls (Elsa Dalziel, Katelyn Guthrie, Zara Currie, Ruby Laing and Caitlin Burn) were in the recording studio during the Easter weekend recording their first album with their band Highline. The five fiddlers practice in the Music department at lunch time on Mondays with Mr Borthwick's ceilidh band and Mr Johnston's string group on Tuesdays. Highline was formed by Carly Blain (a former pupil) who teaches all the members. The CD will be released shortly. Please see the picture below.

"Science Insights" Career Exploration Opportunity for S5 Pupils

‘Science Insights’ in an exciting work experience programme from the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Pupils would spend five days (Monday 22nd – Friday 26th July) following a varied programme of activities on four different University of Edinburgh campuses, gaining a real insight into research and work in biological sciences, medicine and veterinary medicine.

This is only for current S5 pupils (who are staying on for S6) who are interested in possibly pursuing biological or biomedical science as a career.

Activities will include:

  • Shadowing researchers in the workplace
  • Tours of a range of scientific facilities
  • Presentations, workshops and discussions on topics including research ethics, the use of animals in research and careers in science
  • Opportunities to meet current University of Edinburgh students
  • Skills sessions to help with future university and job applications

‘Resilience’ Screening

KHS are hosting a Community Screening of the film Resilience in partnership with Nurturing B-ACEs here on Monday 29th April.

Funding Available - Thomas Maconochie Trust

The next meeting of the Thomas Maconochie Trust will take place on Thursday 23rd May 2019 and bids are invited.  Application forms can be collected from the School Office and must be returned no later than Wednesday 8th May 2019.

Information about the Trust and the purpose of it is detailed below:-

The Thomas Maconochie KHS Trust was established in 2003 by Mr Thomas Maconochie, a former pupil of the school.  The trust is a recognised Charity, Scottish Charity No: SCO34775.

The purposes of the Trust are "to advance the education of children at school in Kelso and its environment in such a way as are over and above the statutory requirement of the relevant Education Authority."

In practice, this means that this Fund may choose to support educational activities carried out by Kelso High School pupils which are not directly funded by legal requirement by the Education Authority, namely Scottish Borders Council.  This may include grants to support:-

  • pupil participation in business and enterprise related activities
  • pupils taking part in school activities and excursions where, for any reason, lack of finance is a barrier to participation
  • the start up of new extra-curricular activities, eg. school shows, drama, etc
  • ongoing running costs for extra-curricular activities, eg. sport, music and drama
  • extra activities offered in school for classes, groups or year groups, eg. conferences, education for work initiatives, visits
  • individual pupil participation in courses and activities, eg. Gap Years
