Kelso 15s/16s Football Report
Finally, Sunday League football is back and the Kelso team will be eager to get the disappointing League campaign over with and focus on the Cup. They still had to play two games and one has a massive impact on the League winners, but that’s next week. This past Sunday, the lads were out for revenge on the Hawick 15s team that embarrassed them last time out at the 3G in Hawick. Kelso had a trick or two up their sleeve as the returning Mikey Kavannagh and Oliver Fairnington did not play the away fixture and were unknown to the visitors. The match started well as Kelso dominated possession early on and that paid off as Mikey Kavannagh ran through on goal and finished from a tight angle. However, the lead was not to last as Hawick sneakily broke through the Kelso defence and made the score 1-1. Owen Cranston then decided to take over the game when he scored a quick first-half hat-trick to really show to Hawick that their victory pre-Christmas was fortunate. Mikey then added to Hawick’s misery when he smashed in his second and Kelso’s fifth before half-time. Half-time score Kelso 5-1 Hawick 15s
The home team took their foot off the gas for 10-15 minutes at the start of the second half but when Owen Cranston was substituted back on he couldn’t help scoring his fourth goal to bring the match back to life. The seventh goal was scored by the tenacious Lewis Finlay when he slotted the ball home for the goal that he deserved. Mikey Kavannagh scored the goal of the game by smashing a free-kick from around 30 yards into the ‘postage stamp’ to grab his hat-trick. It was amazing to watch. Final Score Kelso 8-1 Hawick 15s.
Although a special mention must go to Captain Ryan Fletcher for his excellent game, this was a real ‘squad’ effort for Kelso and they fully deserved their win. Every one of the 15 players played their part giving the Coaches a selection headache for the next game.
The rejuvenated Kelso team play host to a title-chasing Lauder team next Sunday who MUST win every one of their three remaining games if they want to win the League. The fixture is at Woodside Park with kick-off 10.30am. Report by Rhys Lawrence S4
