Weekly Update 20/01/17

Maths - Study Resources

In the Mathematics department we've put together a blog post on some useful study resources for our pupils sitting their Prelims and Exams in the coming weeks.  These resources range from video worked examples to blocks of questions and can be found on the link below.

We've also sent home an order form for pupils to place orders for Past Paper study packs, the return date for the order form is the 24th January.

Battlefields Experience 2017

The 3rd payment for the Battlefields Experience 2017 is now overdue.  Please arrange payment via ParentPay where possible or cash/cheque handed into the School Office.  Cheques should be made payable to Kelso High School.

Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band

The band was reformed in September 2016, and with only 3 additional rehearsals they were entered into the Senior section (under 18s) of the Scottish National Youth Brass Band contest held at Perth Concert Hall in November.  They not only got a gold award from the adjudicators but were also crowned national champions against some well-established bands that have been performing for many years, an amazing result and a credit to the hard work and practice that all members of the band made.  By winning their section they have also been qualified for entry to the European Youth Brass Band championships in Ostend, Belgium, which will take place in April.

KHS pupil Jamie Ball is the percussionist for Abbey Brass (the youth band for Jedforest Instrumental Band), who only formed after the summer holidays, and who also entered the Perth championships in the Novice section (14 and under).  They achieved a silver award from the adjudicators and came in third place in their section, a brilliant result for a band that had only played together for a few months.  Abbey Brass also includes another KHS pupil, Jamie Barber, who plays 1st cornet.  There are photos of both bands on the Scottish Brass Band Facebook page.

The Scottish Borders Youth Brass Band has nearly 40 children from all over the Scottish Borders and Langholm, and they now have the significant challenge to raise the funds needed to cover their costs to attend the competition in Belgium.  There is a crowdfunding page on Justgiving.com which is being used for donations to help towards the sizable sums needed to allow the children to attend (link below).

They are also planning some other fundraising events, such as a sponsored Playathon, in the future and details will be publicised when they have been confirmed.
