S3 Battlefields Experience 2019

Information was sent home to parents of our S3 pupils with details about the above trip happening in May 2019.  A copy of the information from the email is attached below.  If you have not received the email or are unable to view the attachments a hard copy can be collected from the School Office.  If you have not already done so please confirm whether your youngster would like to attend by completing and returning the form included at the end of the information booklet or send an email to [email protected] ASAP.

‘Wee Sleep Out’

KHS is organising a ‘Wee Sleep Out’ event in the Borders for children from the ages of 8-17. The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in Scotland and to raise money for the charity, Social Bite.

Social Bite is a charity that aims to end homelessness in Scotland. As you may be aware, last December, they held a ‘Sleep in the Park’ event in Princes Street Gardens. This was a huge success with around 8,000 people attending but was only open to those aged 16+. As this is the Year of Young People, we wanted to get involved too and spread the word about this cause.  Our ‘Wee Sleep Out’ will be held indoors at BUAS Showground in Kelso on Saturday 10th November from 6.30pm - 6.30am.

Please see attached parental letter regarding this event. If your youngster is interested in taking part please complete the form included and return to the Office by Wednesday 24th October.

S3 YPI Presentation

Following the YPI presentation to our entire S3 year group, George Smuga (former Head Teacher and SQA adviser) was very complimentary about not only the conduct of our pupils but the passion, ideas and enthusiasm they had for the project.  He travels all round Scotland to work with young people and described our pupils as some of the best he had had the pleasure of meeting.  Well done!!

Curling

If you are interested in Curling please see below poster about a new after school club.  All pupils S1-6 welcome.

Thomas Maconochie Trust Meeting - Funding Available

The next meeting of the Thomas Maconochie Trust will take place on Thursday 15th November 2018 and bids for funding are invited.  Application forms can be collected from the School Office and must be returned no later than Wednesday 31st October 2018.

Information about the Trust and the purpose of it is detailed below:-

The Thomas Maconochie KHS Trust was established in 2003 by Mr Thomas Maconochie, a former pupil of the school.  The trust is a recognised Charity, Scottish Charity No: SCO34775.

The purposes of the Trust are "to advance the education of children at school in Kelso and its environment in such a way as are over and above the statutory requirement of the relevant Education Authority."

In practice, this means that this Fund may choose to support educational activities carried out by Kelso High School pupils which are not directly funded by legal requirement by the Education Authority, namely Scottish Borders Council.  This may include grants to support :-

  • pupil participation in business and enterprise related activities
  • pupils taking part in school activities and excursions where, for any reason, lack of finance is a barrier to participation
  • the start-up of new extra-curricular activities, e.g. school shows, drama, etc.
  • ongoing running costs for extra-curricular activities, e.g. sport, music and drama
  • extra activities offered in school for classes, groups or year groups, e.g. conferences, education for work initiatives, visits
  • individual pupil participation in courses and activities, e.g. Gap Years
