Weekly Update 16/02/18

Vision & Values

As we continue to settle into our new environment, the school is entering a new and dynamic phase of its development.  Throughout this past year staff and students have been working to articulate the vision and values that underpin our school community.  Our officially launch is today and all future correspondence and communication will now have our new branding. This will also coincide with the Kelso High School App being available.

Our Vison: With the student at the heart, Kelso High School’s vision is that our whole school community will take PRIDE in everything we do.

Our Values: What we consider important and the actions that will support our young people achieve personal success are:

P - Participation

R - Respect

I - Included

D - Determination

E - Excellence

New KHS App

Our brand new KHS App is now live!!  This can be downloaded from the Apple or Google Play Stores.  This will allow you to keep in touch with all KHS events, news and receive important messages from us.  Flyers have been given out to pupils today but a copy is also attached below.

Parental Survey

KHS are looking to strengthen the link between classroom and home.  In order to help us do this we would be grateful if you could please complete a short survey.  Please follow the link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/RQKVT5S

S1 Pupils

A reminder that all S1 pupils should remain in school over lunch break.

Can parents/carers of pupils that bring home immunisation forms please ensure prompt return of completed forms as pupils without forms on immunisation days will not be immunised.  We are unable to take consent over the telephone as the Assembly Hall has no telephone or mobile signal.  S2 girls and above who have previously had one HPV immunisation will be called automatically for the second immunisation as they require 2 to be fully covered.  Thank you in advance from the Immunisation Team.

Volunteers Required!

Cheviot Youth is looking for adult volunteers to help support our youth activities and projects in Kelso.  A great opportunity to learn new skills, get experience and give a little back whether it’s just for a few hours a month or more.  See the below attachment or email rossirvine@cheviotyouth.co.uk for more information.

Kelso Community Cinema

Please see the attached flyer below outlining the films being shown at the Tait Hall TONIGHT - all welcome!!

Micro-Tyco Fun Run @ Edenside PS

Micro-Tyco is a month-long challenge that enables participants to practice and learn fundamental business principles in a safe, ‘micro’ environment.  Teams from schools have a month to turn £1 seed capital into as much money as possible.  All money created by the Mocro-Tycos is invested in micro-loans for poor entrepreneurs in the developing world.  Participants ‘become entrepreneurs to fund entrepreneurs’.

As part of this a fun run is taking place at Edenside PS tomorrow (Saturday 17th February) from 2.30pm - 3.30pm.  Entry is £1 for 5-11 year olds and £2 for adults.  There will be obstacles along the way as well as a bake sale to raise money for this initiative.  All welcome, come along and join in the fun!!

Scottish Schools Athletics - Update

Josh Abbott, Douglas Young, Ben Lyall and Angus Bryce all attended the Emirates in Glasgow last week.  Josh, Angus and Ben went up on Wednesday to take part in the 200m.  Ben, in the under 16 age group, won his heat in a time of 24.41 which took him into the semi-final where he ran a great race in a time of 24.46.  Unfortunately this wasn’t fast enough to get him into the final.  Next up was Angus Bryce in the over 16 age group who came 2nd in his heat with a time of 23.98.  This took him into the semi-final where he also ran well in a time of 23.91 unfortunately this wasn’t fast enough to make the final.  Josh was last to go also in the over 16 age group where he was 3rd in his heat in a time of 23.87 and also made it into the semi- final.  He then went on to run a great PB of 23.65 but not quite good enough to make the final either.

Day 2 saw Josh, Ben and Douglas running in the 60m.  Ben up first in the under 16 age group, he was 3rd in his heat in 7.76 which took him into the semi-final where he ran well in a time of 7.81 however not fast enough to get into the final.  Douglas was up next in the over 16 age group where he was 2nd in his heat in a time of 7.37 taking him into the semi-final where he ran another fast race time 7.34 taking him into the final.  He finished 3rd equal with a new PB time of 7.30 but missed out on a medal due to the photo finish.  Josh was up next in his heat where he was 5th in a time of 7.58 in the faster heat of the day where the first 5 in that heat qualified for the semi-final, he then ran another PB of 7.53 but unfortunately wasn’t fast enough to get into the final.  Well done boys, great achievements!!  Photos below.

Keep Kelso / KHS Tidy!

Pupils are reminded to respect both their school and their community and ensure that they use rubbish bins provided around school and the town to dispose of any litter.  If anyone has any suggestions on how we can promote this to stop littering please contact KHS at KelsoHS@scotborders.gov.uk.
