Weekly Update 15/12/17
School Show 2017!
This week pupils from KHS put on two amazing performances of 'Little Shop of Horrors' - humour and horror! They showed great commitment, having attended rehearsals every Monday and Wednesday after school since August, and meeting the challenges of putting on a show in a new venue. Well done to all involved! For photos follow the below link:
Biking to/from School
A reminder now we are into the dark mornings and evenings that children stay safe when biking to and from school. Please ensure bikes have front and back lights and pupils are wearing appropriate protective wear and can be seen by motorists.
Clubs & Study Sessions @ KHS
A timetable of clubs and study sessions that run at KHS has been added into the ‘School Bag’ to the right of this page. We would be delighted to see pupils joining in with these clubs and sessions. All welcome!!
Keep Kelso / KHS Tidy!
Pupils are reminded to respect both their school and their community and ensure that they use rubbish bins provided around school and the town to dispose of any litter. If anyone has any suggestions on how we can promote this to stop littering please contact KHS at KelsoHS@scotborders.gov.uk.
Kelso Ice Rink
This Sunday (17th December) will be the last public skating session before Christmas, open 2.45pm to 5.15pm. All welcome.
KHS Bee Part of It - Query
Could whoever purchased Alice's Adventures in Wonderland for the school library from our Amazon wishlist please contact the school librarian on 01573 227440 or at email@example.com. Unfortunately the book has not been delivered and we are unable to query it with Amazon.
Congratulations to Hollie McLear (S1), Holly Chatburn (S3) and Lily Pattinson (S3) who won a scholarship in ballet and have been performing alongside the Performing Arts Studio Scotland this week in Edinburgh. This is a fantastic opportunity for the girls and a real credit to them for being selected on merit of showing talent and dedication in dance. Well done!!
Hockey 'double' toast to end the year
We have had lots going on over the past month with the move to our new school and astro pitches, which have gone down brilliantly with everyone! Let’s start with the double success for our fantastic 1st XI and 2nd XI teams, both of whom are now Borders Secondary Schools Champions! The 1st X1, captained by Lucy Murray with Rachel Burgher vice-captain, were in tremendous form at Earlston High School. They started by beating Jedburgh GS 5-0 with a hat-trick from Lucy Murray and further goals from Emma Mack and Sophie Graham (not forgetting the disallowed goal by Rachel Burgher), and then were held out despite some great hockey in 0-0 draws with Galashiels Academy and Earlston HS.
That was enough to top the pool, however, and a goal from Chloe Aitchison took Kelso past Hawick in the semi-final and despite facing extreme pressure from Gala in the final, the Kelso players showed great resilience to hold out and went on to win the final 2-0 in extra-time with goals from Lucy and Rachel to bring the cup back to Kelso – our first success for the new school!
Thanks to all the players for their effort and special mention goes to super-sub Hannah Patterson and the injured Ginny Green for their support, Susan Lawrence for coaching, Lynn Young for umpiring and all the spectators, whose vocal support was tremendous.
Then it was the turn of our 2nd XI – and they repeated the trick at Earlston HS. They drew 0-0 with the hosts and Peebles HS but the quality hockey then came through as they defeated Hawick HS 4-0 with goals from Captain Lauren Curran, Hannah (2) and Leanne, and those goals proved enough to retain the trophy. Hawick HS got their revenge in the Borders Schools Indoor Tournament this month despite some great hockey from our seniors. Kelso beat Peebles HS 3-1, Selkirk 4-0 and Galashiels Academy 2-0 and produced some scintillating indoor hockey before a heroic effort in the final - particularly goalie Lucy Coupek - fell just short as Hawick emerged 4-2 victors.
Thanks to all parents who supported our squad and congratulations to our players for their great commitment, which brought its reward.
Player turned coach wins title - Congratulations to one of our former senior players, Linsey Young, who was voted 2017 Clubsport Roxburgh 'Young Coach of the Year’. Now studying to be a PE teacher at Edinburgh University, Linsey would like to thank Mrs Weir, teachers at Kelso High School and all of her former teammates for their help and support – and, who knows, we may see her back to guide more youngsters in the future. Well done Linsey!
Cup team just miss out - A number of games fell foul of November's wintry weather, but the S3s/S2s Scottish Plate match finally went ahead away to Glasgow Academy and despite terrific work-rate and defence in particular, two goals from penalty corners in the second half took a strong Glasgow side through. We’d like to thank all parents who offered help with transport, including for the postponed game, and to Claire Freeland-Cook for accompanying the team to Glasgow - with great Sat-Nav skills - when we did get there!
Cougars and Coyotes roaring in the East League - S3s, S2s and S1s have also been flying the Kelso flag high with some great hockey in the East League in Edinburgh, with early Sunday morning starts and cold weather at Meggetland. There have been wins and losses for the Cougars and Coyotes, but all of the players are having fun and showing terrific improvement in their skills which is great to see.
Thanks for Foodbank help - Thank you to all the players who contributed to our Christmas Foodbank Initiative, with lots of food donated to help support people in the Kelso area who will find it particularly tough this winter. You probably will not realise how much your little gift is appreciated but it is great that we are able to help our own, so thanks.
Appeal for coaches - Finally, an appeal for help for the Borders Hockey Development squads. We need Level 1 qualified coaches and volunteer parents to support the squads who train at Tweedbank, Hawick and Kelso, starting in February. If anyone can help drop an email to Sarah at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We wish a very Merry Christmas to all of our young players, their parents, our volunteer coaches and all who give our youngsters the chance to enjoy sport.
