BHS Borders Ex Gratia Training Awards

British Horse Society (BHS) Scotland is Scotland's largest equine membership organisation with around 6000 members and rising.  The Borders branch of BHS is run by volunteers for the benefit of local horse enthusiasts.  Our Committee help deliver BHS work in the areas of access, welfare, safety, training, competitions, education, exams, riding clubs and more.  In the Borders we have established a fund and invite individual applications for assistance towards training /education/employment in all things equine related.  In the past year we have contributed towards individuals cost with:

  • 1 BHS Stage 1 riding and horse care qualification,
  • 9 Pony Club Members and Volunteers First Aid training,
  • 11 Borders College Students sit the BHS Ride Safe award (Road Safety),
  • 1 human physiotherapist with her training to become a qualified Equine physiotherapist,
  • 2 young people in isolated areas with driving instruction,
  • 1 young person with sitting ABRS Coaching certification,
  • 1 young person with Pony Club B Test

Our featured recipient is Duncan McFadyen and his story shows commitment here in the Borders to partnerships working together to help our young people learn, develop and achieve their potential.  In Duncan’s case Kelso High School, Floors Stud and BHS Borders along with his mum facilitated his training towards employment in the equine industry.

Kelso High School permitted him to incorporate work experience into his timetable, The Duke and Duchess of Roxburgh gave him a placement at Floors Stud, and finally BHS Borders gave him financial assistance towards his recent successful Pony Club B test examinations. Duncan has secured employment and will shortly be moving south.

Pictured below presenting Duncan with £500 are Viv Potts (BHS Borders), Duncan McFadyen, Tom Angus (Kelso High School) and Anghous Ryan (Floors Stud)

The Training Fund has awarded its full allocation this year but applications will be invited again in 2019. To apply message our Facebook page BHS Borders.

Kelso U13 Football

Having already claimed the League and Cup Double, Kelso travelled to Kirkliston South Queensferry on Sunday for their final league game of the season looking to maintain their undefeated status.  Despite missing a number of opportunities to score they ran out comfortable winners to claim the league title by 7 points from their nearest rival at the final standings.  A headed goal in the first half by Sam Wood from a Chad Patterson cross was followed up by a second half hat-trick by Aaron Ford and a good strike by Callum Philips. Some missed chances and a great performance by the KSQ goalkeeper kept the score line to 5-0.  Next season will see them face even tougher tests following their promotion to the second division.

Kelso Team: Ben Stewart (Capt), Adam Paterson, Josh Coulter, Chad Patterson, Dylan McKenzie, Angus Utterson, Callum Philips, McKenzie Shaw, Aaron Ford, Sam Wood, Ben Burton (P7 Edenside), Euan Graham (P7 Broomlands), Drew Muir, Liam Snowball, Conal McDonald, Fraser Moffat (BHS), Cairn Robson (EHS)

Keep Kelso / KHS Tidy!

Pupils are reminded to respect both their school and their community and ensure that they use rubbish bins provided around school and the town to dispose of any litter.  If anyone has any suggestions on how we can promote this to stop littering please contact KHS at [email protected].
