Parents of S1 Pupils

S1 are about to begin a 9 week block of work in PSE on Sexual Health and Relationships Education. We will be following the lessons plans in the SHARE resource developed for use in schools by the NHS.

The values underlying the SHARE programme are:

• our sexuality is a natural and healthy part of who we are

• each of us feels differently about our sexuality, and we may express it in different ways

• we should treat each other as we would like to be treated

• we should never have to do anything sexual we don’t want to do

• if we do choose to have sex, we should protect ourselves and sexual partners from unwanted pregnancy and from sexually transmitted infections.

National 5 and Higher Social Subjects

Pupils sitting National 5 and Higher Social Subjects (History, Geography, Modern Studies and Politics) will be sitting their Assignment during March.  The calendar is attached below.

In National 5 pupils will get an hour to write up their assignment under exam conditions and it is worth 25% of their total exam mark.

In Higher pupils it is worth a third of their total mark and they get an hour and half to write it up, also under exam conditions.

Both involve lengthy preparation which has been started in class but pupils will need to work at home in order to collect research and prepare for their write up.  Your help would be appreciated in supporting your youngster with this.  Please contact Ms James if you have any queries / issues.

Battlefields Experience 2017

The 4th payment for the Battlefields Experience 2017 is now overdue.  Please arrange payment via ParentPay where possible or cash/cheque handed into the School Office.  Cheques should be made payable to Kelso High School.

Sainsburys Active Kids Vouchers

KHS will be collecting Active Kids vouchers again this year, with the intention to use these for both cooking and sports equipment.  If you would like to donate any vouchers, please hand them in to either the HE or PE staff bases or the main Office.  Thank you for your support.

Sick Bay

Please can you remind your youngster that if they feel unwell during school time they should report to sick bay. They should not call you to arrange to go home or go home without telling someone in the school.  In sickbay your youngster will be assessed by a first aider who will call home if necessary.

Library - The Day

KHS has recently subscribed to The Day, a daily online newspaper for teenagers which focuses on the big issues that are transforming our world.  The Day team aim to explain current affairs in a balanced and unpatronising way.  Their mission is 'to help students think about what they can see and hear around them in the news day by day; to learn to make the link between this and what they are studying and to understand the relevance and importance of knowledge; to think for themselves and talk about everything, to debate, discuss and research; to grow in confidence and find their own voice.'

Students who have already been shown the resource have all found it very thought-provoking and something that they would like to revisit.

Why not have a look at it yourself by clicking on The Day link in the Quick Links section on the homepage of the school website?
