Hockey Update

2nd XI are the champions!

KHS came out on top after a nail-biting end to the South Schools 2nd X1 Tournament at Earlston on Friday.  The hockey was of a very high standard and Peebles emerged victors from Section A with Hawick runners-up and Kelso topped Section B with Selkirk in second spot.  A goal apiece from Emma Mack and Shania Dalgleish gave the Kelso girls a 2-0 victory over Selkirk and they followed this up with the same result against Berwickshire HS with captain Flo Mace and Shania Dalgliesh finishing some great work.  Peebles edged a tight semi-final with Selkirk on sudden death penalties, but Kelso managed to book their final spot in normal time thanks to a great strike from a penalty corner by Emma Mack deflected into the net by the ever-alert Holly Hay.  The final was a fast-paced game with Peebles moving the ball quickly and always looking to create chances, but Kelso's defence contained them well and their midfield battled to gain control of the match and penetrate the circle. They managed to do this well towards the end of the game and were awarded several penalty corners, but Peebles defended superbly and held Kelso out, making the score a goal-less draw at full time. An extra five minutes were played and with Kelso immediately on the offensive, they again won a penalty corner and, with constant pressure on the goal as the final whistle blew, were awarded a penalty stroke.  Amy Purves stepped up to take this and a great strike into the bottom left corner left the superb 'keeper Kazya Stevens in the Peebles goal with no chance and handed Kelso the game and the South Schools 2nd XI trophy.
The win was great reward for terrific commitment from many girls not always centre stage but who have worked hard at their game, shown terrific dedication and represented Kelso High School - in all weathers! - for many years.  We are delighted for the whole squad and Director of Hockey Mrs Weir - you are a credit to our school!

Kelso 16s Football Report

This week, Kelso returned to Woodside Park and played host to a tricky Selkirk team.  No team started well, although the away side took the lead when Kelso goalkeeper Rhys Lawrence made an excellent double save, only for the striker to blast the ball over him into the roof of the net from the resulting melee.  Kelso responded by piling on the pressure to the Selkirk back line who were depleted after an early injury.  This pressure eventually paid off when Ben Purcell fired a low toe poke from the edge of the box into the corner via a big bobble in front of the ‘keeper.  Half-time Kelso 1-1 Selkirk.

The second half wasn’t an entertaining one for about 10-15 mins as Kelso lost focus but Selkirk failed to capitalise on this.  Out of nowhere, Lewis Finlay latched onto a loose ball and smashed it over the ‘keeper into the net.  The returning Jake Douglas then ran on to a great through ball from Ashley James and excellently chipped the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

Final score Kelso 3-1 Selkirk.  Kelso round off the first half of the season this Sunday away to Hawick 15s on their excellent 3G pitch. Kick-off time still to be arranged.  Report by Rhys Lawrence (S4)
