S3 Battlefields Experience 2018

On 26th May, 99 S3 students and 11 members of staff set off for the WW1 Battlefields of Belgium and France.  We had 6 very busy days walking in the footsteps of the Pal’s Battalions that set off from Kelso 100 years ago.  Pupils learned a great deal about the war, but also about themselves and there will be a full report in the next issue.  On our return to school, we were delighted to receive the following email from a member of the public who we met on the ferry:

Dear Mrs Lothian

I was on the ferry with your students yesterday travelling to Dover.

I would like to take this opportunity to say what a lovely group of young adults they were. They are a credit to your school. I chatted with one of the boys very briefly. He was saying how humbling the Battlefields were. They were all having a wonderful time chatting and laughing with each other.

I just thought with all the negative things happening in this world....you should know that your school seems to be teaching all the right things to your students.

Best wishes for continued success

Football Update

In their first season in the Edinburgh leagues (and the first for any Kelso junior football team) Kelso U-13’s clinched the SERYFA Division III title on Sunday.  Anything except a defeat against their closest rivals Loanhead would do and they managed to come back from two goals down to claim the Championship by gaining the draw they required.

On a wet morning at Woodside, Loanhead found themselves 2-0 up in 10 mins following a good shot from the edge of the box and a corner being bundled in at the back post. This stung Kelso into life and on 25 mins they won a penalty which Conal MacDonald coolly slotted into the corner of the goal. Kelso pressed for an equaliser and looked as though they had it following a goal line scramble which looked to have crossed the line but the referee couldn’t be sure and so it remained 1-2 at half-time. Kelso got the equaliser early in the second half with Adam Paterson scoring with a good strike from the edge of the box. Loanhead resorted to playing long balls in search of the winner that would take the league to the last game of the season but the Kelso defence dealt with this admirably and it was Kelso that were unfortunate not to grab the winner in the end.

With the League and Cup double already in the bag, the final game of the season away to Kirkliston South Queensferry could yield an unbeaten league campaign, currently; P23 W20 D3 L0.  Great achievement!

Kelso Team - Ben Stewart (Capt), Adam Paterson, Josh Coulter, Chad Patterson, Dylan McKenzie, Angus Utterson, Callum Philips, McKenzie Shaw, Aaron Ford, Sam Wood, Ben Burton (P7 Edenside), Euan Graham (P7 Broomlands), Drew Muir, Liam Snowball, Conal McDonald, Fraser Moffat (BHS), Cairn Robson (EHS)

Keep Kelso / KHS Tidy!

Pupils are reminded to respect both their school and their community and ensure that they use rubbish bins provided around school and the town to dispose of any litter.  If anyone has any suggestions on how we can promote this to stop littering please contact KHS at [email protected].
